# Taxonomy

**A taxonomy is a controlled, agreed-upon set of categories used to classify things consistently, rather than free-form tags.**

A **taxonomy** is a fixed vocabulary of categories with clear definitions. Because the set is controlled, every item is classified the same way, which keeps browsing and filtering coherent.

It differs from free tagging: tags grow organically and drift; a taxonomy is deliberately curated and stable.

## In GraphCanon

GraphCanon classifies every tool against a locked canonical category taxonomy (LLM frameworks, vector databases, AI agents, and so on), with free-form tags layered on top for nuance.
